Tess’s call has sent me reeling. I sit at the kitchen table with my head in my hands, replaying the conversation, telling myself she must have got the wrong end of the stick. But, hard as it is to believe, Tess has no reason to make it up. What would she gain from it? Nothing.

She might give the impression of being a pleasure-seeking party girl, but beneath the surface she is one of the kindest, most empathetic people I have ever met. She was there for me after I lost the baby. Miles had grown tired of my tears by the time he flew back to the rig. But Tess came over to the apartment every day so I wasn’t on my own. For three weeks she held my hand and listened to me weep. She bought me maternity pads and stroked my brow and then listened to me weep some more. I have no reason to doubt her.

Even so, something is nagging at me. Something that doesn’t add up. It’s only when my gaze falls on the empty shopping bags hanging on the back of the door that I realise what it is. We’ve been fine for money these last few months. Miles hasn’t said anything about tightening our belts, at any rate. I’ve been buying petrol and food as normal. I paid the garage over five hundred quid for the Mini’s service and MOT. I even ordered some new patio furniture for the garden, and not once has my debit card been rejected.

There’s no way we could have covered the bills for the last four months with no money coming in. I just need to check our statements to confirm Miles is still being paid.

Miles handles our finances and has the banking apps on his phone. But he has yet to go completely paperless and keeps the statements in a set of files in a bookcase in the dining room.

I’m about to check when the back door bursts open and he appears, his cheeks flushed and his eyes ever so slightly glazed.

‘Did you have a nice time?’ I ask, flicking on the kettle.

He shrugs. ‘Made a change. And it’s not fair if you’re the only one who gets to go out and get pissed, is it?’

I let this go and make two mugs of tea.

‘Where’s Max?’ Miles asks.

‘In the living room having a nap. He crashed out the minute he finished his bottle. Must be all the fresh air.’

I hand Miles his tea and sit opposite him.

‘How are we for money this month?’ I ask.

‘Why?’

‘I wondered if there was enough in the current account for a buggy for Wren… I mean Max.’

‘Depends how much they are.’

I open Amazon on my phone and scroll through a couple of pages of buggies. ‘Anything from fifty upwards.’

‘Do they have any running ones?’

I change the search parameters and keep scrolling. ‘This one has good reviews.’ I hand Miles my phone.

He glances at the picture. ‘Order it.’

‘Are you sure? It’s over three hundred pounds.
